High affinity of 3D spongin scaffold towards Hg(II) in real waters

This study focuses on the ability of commercial natural bath sponges, which are made from skeletons marine to sorb Hg waters. The main component these sponges is spongin, a protein-based material, closely related collagen, offering plenitude reactive sites great variety amino acids in protein chains, where ions can sorb. For dose 40 mg L−1 and initial concentration 50 μg Hg(II), spongin (MS) removed ~90% 3 water matrixes (ultrapure, bottled, seawater), corresponding residual ~5 L−1, tends recommend value for drinking 1 L−1. was maintained even by increasing MS dosage, suggesting existence gradient threshold below sorption mechanism halts. Kinetic modelling showed that Pseudo Second-Order equation best fit all matrixes, indicates relies most probably chemical interactions between functional groups ions. material also be regenerated HNO3 reused sorption, with marginal losses efficiency, at least consecutive cycles.
